The Gundog Beginner


Develop a fun partnership with your dog using positive reinforcement and reward based methods.

This is a 6-week course working you towards Grade One of the Gundog Club Graded Scheme and focuses on developing the skills learnt in the Gundog Training course and continues working you and your dog even more as a team and building on the trusting relationship.


They provide a great foundation for both pet or working Gundogs. They are suitable for all gundogs who are being trained for Spaniel, Retriever, or HPR style gundog work. No pedigree is required.


The Assessments are split into 2 parts;

  • Basic Obedience
  • Basic Retrieves.


For the HPRs there is a third part that looks at their natural hunting aptitude and ability.


These basic field assessments looks to set you up on the first stage in the Gundog Club's training programme of a competent gundog.


The sessions are a great way to train your dog for a range of purposes. It can be used to train your dog:

  • As a well behaved pet dog 
  • As a working gundog 
  • For working tests and field trials

Topics it includes:

  • Heelwork - on & off lead for a longer duration building on connection
  • Whistle cues - building on distance control
  • Hunting patterns (Spaniels /HPRs)
  • Steadiness
  • Seen Retrieves - perfecting the retrieve pattern
  • plus much more


Please note, dogs must be able to cope and stay in the car during the breaks. 


Suitable for all gundog breeds over 7 months of age who have either attended a Puppy, Foundation Gundog course or have had a 1-1 session with Lindsay or Sophie before starting this course.


The Assessment to get your Grade One  is Optional and will be taken after the 6-week course. 


For those wishing to take the Gundog Club Assessments, there is a one-off registration fee of £14 per dog.


There is then an individual assessment cost for Grade 1, which is £38

Please Note:

  • Please note that refunds will not be given if you are no longer able to attend your booking, your female dogs come into season or they are ill during the course and you're no longer able to continue.
  • Places are not confirmed until payment has been received. If you reserve a place via choosing to book via BACs but someone pays before you - unfortunately they'll get the place.


  • A session may be covered over a live Zoom session if the weather is too cold/severe or even too hot in the Summer months, for the welfare of your dogs. You will get more from your dog in your front room than them shutting down if they are too cold and wet.
